Far Infrared Saunas For Insomnia Relief

Posted

If you’re one of the millions of people who struggles with regular bouts of insomnia, you know that many products promise relief. You may be reluctant to believe the great press around far infrared saunas--after all, why should a sauna help you to sleep? Here’s our take on why sauna sessions can help you get the sleep you need.

What Is An Infrared Sauna?

An infrared sauna is a modern version of the more familiar “steam based” or “traditional” type of sauna. Traditional saunas have long been recognized as relaxing and beneficial to mental and physical health, but they were also expensive, and because they required a special room to be constructed (or, sometimes, an entirely separate shed or building), they tended to be relatively rare. An infrared sauna uses the power of infrared light to heat the body directly, allowing the user to experience the benefits of sauna sessions in a shorter amount of time, and allowing the units to be installed in normal houses at a much lower expense than that of installing a traditional steam sauna.

How An Infrared Sauna Can Improve Your Sleep

Sauna users regularly report improved sleep after sauna use, but it can be helpful to understand the science behind the anecdotal stories. Here are some of the ways that sauna use can help you sleep through the night:

● Altered body temperature: One of the things that impacts your circadian rhythm (or “body clock”) is, unsurprisingly, body temperature. A drop in body temperature that signals the onset of night is one of the cues that your brain uses to decide it’s time to sleep. So how does heating your body up in a sauna help? You can time your sauna session so that you’ll be experiencing a body temperature drop right before bed. If you go to sleep at a 9pm, for example, a sauna session before dinner would be ideal.

● Decreased Stress: If your mind races at night and keeps you awake, consider whether your stress-management strategies might need an upgrade. The warmth, quiet, and relative dimness of a sauna all tend to be stress-relievers for people, as does the mild elevation in heart rate that results from an infrared sauna session.

● Decreased Pain: Sometimes insomnia isn’t caused by a racing mind as it is by an aching back--or hip, or shoulder, or knee. If you suffer from arthritis or other forms of chronic pain, you’ll want to know that many people have reported that sauna use significantly reduces their pain. In this case, try a sauna session right before bed and the pain relief might allow you to get to sleep faster.

While our modern life can tempt us to ignore or downplay the importance of sleep, we now know that getting enough rest is vital to our health and sense of well-being. If you’re not getting the sleep you need, consider adding an infrared sauna to your treatment plan. We think you’ll be glad you did.
